Registration is now open for the next event in the IAVCEI ECR-Net Masterclass Series, taking place on Wednesday 19th August 2026, from 15:00–17:00 UTC.
Forging an Identity in Research
This online panel discussion will explore how early-career researchers can begin to establish themselves as independent scientists, develop their own research direction, and navigate careers that do not always follow a linear path.
We are excited to be joined by:
Dr Kayla Iacovino, SETI Institute
Dr Karen Holmberg, New York University Gallatin
Professor Tom Gernon, University of Southampton
Our panellists have followed varied and interdisciplinary routes into volcanology and related fields. The session will include reflections from each panellist, a moderated discussion, and plenty of opportunity for audience questions. Topics will include developing a scientific identity, balancing career requirements with personal research interests, managing multiple projects, and considering the wider responsibilities of Earth scientists within society.
The event is aimed at early-career researchers across the IAVCEI community.
